Shalom my friends,
May parents always tell me if you do not hear your little children making noise, something is wrong!
Today one year ago the so called "Green Revolution" was underway. After Ahmendenijad stole the election, the domestic opposition, the voices of democracy, civil and human rights, were demonstrating in full volume (tweeting, facebooking, blogging, getting the word and pictures out). Today... what remains? All that we experience today is the most deafening and horrifying sounds of all: SILENCE!
While the UN Security Council passed the 4th Round of sanctions against this murderous regime of Iran, we welcome this gesture and hope that it will in any way impact the leadership of Iran and the Revolutionary Guard. And it seems that through the thunderous applause the world gave itself for passing another round of sanctions, we are again deafened by the lack of the voices that call for civil and human rights and the protection of innocent people in Iran.
Where is the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights calling for a "full and independent" investigation into the disappearances and murder of countless human beings that strive for liberty in their own country against an illegitimate and totalitarian regime? Probably pointing fingers at the under international law legal blockade of Gaza by Israel. Why one may ask? One reason being that the only country every singled out and condemned is Israel, while the Human Rights Council is merely "deeply concerned" about the atrocities in Darfur. One might think that 9 violent protestors on a ship trying to forcefully break a blockade are more important than over 400,000 innocent civilians in Darfur that were slaughter. But no reason to go into a deeper discussion.
The point is: The world is silent AGAIN!!!!
The global financial crisis, the weakened EURO, the World Cup, and let us not forget the glorious Apple iPad, seem more important. While the sounds of the Vuvuzelas make us deaf to the commentators of the FIFA World Cup, hatred, ignorance, and hypocrisy make us deaf (and blind for that matter) to massive violations of human rights.
One year after the silent (and frightened) majority in Iran tried to make themselves heard and by doing so begged for the help of the international community, they are heard no more. No more protest for freedom and democracy, no more tweets and iReports. All that remains is the sound of silence. A sound it seems that the international community chooses to ignore, just as it did between 1933-1945, just as it did in 1994, just as it did in 2004, and just as it does today!
be well (make noise!)
Micha
